Project 5:
Complementary Mandalas

Competency 1: Creates Personal Images

This project has Four  stages:

1. Draw a large circle and divide it into 8-10  pie pieces. Fold circle to receive the desired markings

2. Draw a linear design on the circle or repeat a more detailed design in each pie section

3. choose a complementary color scheme, and color the composition alternating between the two main colors and adding shades (black) and tints (white)

4. When dry, cut out your mandala and paste onto your choice of background.

What is a Mandala?
  • It is a Radial Symmetry
  • It has spiritual and ritual significance in both Buddhism and Hinduism
  • In the Tibetan branch of Vajrayana Buddhism, mandalas have been developed into sand-painting. They are also a key part of meditation practices.
  • They are used for
    • establishing a sacred space
    • as an aid to meditation and trance induction
  • The psychoanalyst Carl Jung said a mandala is: "a representation of the unconscious self”
  • In common use, mandalas have become a term for any plan, chart or geometric pattern that represents the cosmos metaphysically or symbolical
  • a microcosm of the Universe from the human perspective
