• Dutch-Frisian graphic artist.
  • Known for his mathematically inspired drawings, woodcuts, and lithographs.
  • These feature impossible constructions, explorations of infinity, architecture, and tessellations.
  • A sickly child, and though he excelled at drawing, his grades were generally poor.
  • In 1919, failed Haarlem School of Architecture and Decorative Arts, and switched to decorative arts.
  • In 1922 he left school, traveled and was inspired by the Italian countryside and by the Alhambra, a fourteenth-century Moorish castle in Granada, Spain.
  • Finally settled in Netherland after WW2, where he lived till his death.
